Instructions for Authors
All authors should download our Instructions for Authors. These instructions should be rigorously adhered to by all authors, especially in regard to style and format of headings, citations and references.
Copyright Transfer Form
All authors should download our Copyright Transfer Form. This form should be signed and returned to the address indicated by airmail.
Permissions Form
All authors should download our Permissions Form. This form is required if your contribution, or a large part of your contribution, or any figure or table that forms part of your contribution, has been published previously (please read the section "Copyright and Permissions" below).
Colour Figures
Note that there is a charge to authors for colour figures.
Electronic Submission
If directed by their editor, authors may submit their initial manuscript by email to the editor in the format specified by the editor (e.g. PDF, Word, etc). The editor will then respond with a list of corrections, suggestions for improvements, alterations, etc. Finally the editor will indicate that the manuscript has been accepted.
Please Note: When your manuscript has been accepted by the editor it is essential that you send to the editor:
(1) a hardcopy of the final manuscript
(2) the electronic files in the format specified in the Instructions for Authors. A PDF file is not acceptable for this purpose!
References should be cited in the text in parentheses in order of date, as follows (Sambrook et al., 1989; Fuller, 1999). The reference list should be in alphabetical order. Follow the style indicated:
Article in a journal:
Altschul, S.F., Gish, W., Miller, W., Myers, E.W., and Lipman, D.J. (1990). Basic local alignment search tool. J. Mol. Biol. 215, 403-410.
Chapter in a book:
Fuller, R. (1999). Probiotics for farm animals. In Probiotics: A Critical Review, G.W. Tannock, ed. (Wymondham, UK: Horizon Scientific Press), pp. 15-22.
An entire book:
Sambrook, J., Fritsch, E.F., and Maniatis, T. (1989). Molecular Cloning: A Laboratory Manual (New York: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press).
Please note: Users of EndNote or Reference Manager should adopt the reference style of the journal "Cell" which is identical to ours.
The reference section should include only papers that are published or in press. Unpublished or submitted work should be cited in the text, as follows (J. R. Martins, unpublished). It is the responsibility of the authors to obtain permission for personal communications and a letter of permission should be enclosed with the manuscript.
In particular, ensure that the publisher receives high-quality hard copy of figures and tables. The final quality of your figures cannot be greater than the quality of the hard copy supplied by the author.
You are STRONGLY advised NOT to submit any material that has been previously published. However if any figure or table has been published previously you must download a copy of our Permissions Form. You must have the form signed by the original publisher and enclose the signed form with your submitted manuscript.
International copyright law prevents us from publishing such material unless you send us the appropriate signed Permissions Form. Without the signed form any such figure, table or other material will be deleted from your manuscript prior to publication.
