November 7, 2011 Symposium of The Danish Microbiological Society
Copenhagen, Denmark Further information
2011 Symposium of The Danish Microbiological Society. The dynamics in the diverse microflora directly associated with humans, and associated effects on human health, are just beginning to be understood , and the impacts of isolation and space conditions (particularly ionizing radiation) are poorly understood. Just as on Earth, microorganisms will play a key role in sustainably providing environmental life support within the system, including water purification, nutrient regeneration for plant systems, and potential energy and material production. Innovative, small scale biological systems are unique sustainable attributes, and their application in spaceflight offer a model for decentralized systems on Earth. While various conceptual and empirical approaches for incorporating microorganisms into life support systems for space have been evaluated (and will be reviewed) , the long term stability of integrated systems have not been established. The direct dependence of human health on the complex microbiome within the closed systems challenges our ability to construct and maintain microbial communities. Advanced monitoring tools may be useful, but conceptual frameworks of microbial communities as complex adaptive systems are even more important for effective management.

Conference Update

October 2 - 7, 2011 Synthetic Biology of Antibiotic Production
Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain Further information
The European Science Foundation (ESF) in partnership with EMBO is organising this conference on Synthetic Biology of Antibiotic Production. This conference will focus on the advancement of synthetic biology, especially its application in the field of antibiotic production in filamentous fungi and actinomycete bacteria, including the implementation and modification of complex biosynthesis pathway modules in existing and new production hosts. Antibiotics production is regulated by complex networks and involves intricate multi-step biosynthetic machineries, as well as major reorganization of primary metabolic fluxes to redirect cellular metabolic resources towards their biosynthesis. The urgent need for new antibiotics caused by the accelerating emergence of multi-drug resistant pathogens worldwide has led to a strong interest in the research community for decidedly novel approaches, collectively referred to as Synthetic Biology. Given the exquisitely modular nature of antibiotics biosynthesis in microorganisms and the advanced state of knowledge on it, the biotechnological manipulation of antibiotic production can be envisaged as one of the most promising first concrete industrial application domain of synthetic biology concepts. For this potential to be realized, it is critical to bring together the highly interdisciplinary community that has recently started investigating various aspects of the synthetic biology of antibiotic production. This community includes people from such diverse disciplines as metagenomics, combinatorial biochemistry, mathematical and computational modelling, cell engineering, molecular cell biology and biotechnology, and many more, both from academia and the biotechnology industry. The aim of this conference is to facilitate the indispensable mutual communication between researchers from these disciplines in a setting that stimulates the intense exchange of both fundamental knowledge and technical advancement. At the same time, it is a major opportunity to evoke broader awareness and interest in synthetic biology concepts in the microbiology community, which would not be reached by general synthetic biology conferences.

March 2011

March 20 - 25, 2011 HIV Evolution, Genomics and Pathogenesis
Whistler, British Columbia, Canada Further information
Elucidating the molecular mechanisms of HIV pathogenesis relies on understanding the complex interplay between the virus and its host. Increasingly, the field is relying on the power of comparative studies of similar viruses in other species, and on whole genome analyses to elucidate which pathways are critical. The use of evolutionary analyses of both host and virus is also providing novel insights into viral transmission and innate immune responses. This Keystone Symposia meeting will use diverse disciplines to promote further insights into the dynamic interplay between the virus and the host in areas of pathogenesis, mucosal biology, the roles of viral and host genes, and viral latency. Understanding these issues is critical for the design and development of an effective vaccine and the next generation of antiviral agents.

March 25 - 30, 2011 Protection from HIV: Targeted Intervention Strategies
Whistler, British Columbia, Canada Further information
Biological efforts to prevent HIV infection center on four independent approaches: inducing adaptive immune responses through vaccination, augmenting innate responses, using peri-exposure prophylactic drug therapy, and developing microbicides and/or recombinant antiviral microbial products. While all four of these approaches have promise, they still require significant optimization and further clinical trials. Indeed, successful prevention of HIV infection will likely require a combination of these approaches. Such development efforts require a better understanding of viral and immunological events at the site of transmission. This Keystone Symposia meeting will have a focus on mucosal immunology as well as the interplay between the virus and innate and adaptive immune responses, particularly during the acute phase of the infection. Leading experts in the fields will discuss recent scientific advances in these varied approaches to preventing infection and present data from recent clinical trials testing their efficacy.

May 23 - 28, 2011 Pathogenesis of Influenza: Virus-Host Interactions
Hong Kong, China Further information
The mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of influenza remain controversial. The direct cytopathic effects of viral replication, tissue tropism of the virus, viral-bacterial synergy, as well as innate host responses are inextricably linked and play roles to varying degrees in "seasonal," zoonotic and pandemic influenza, examples being the pandemics of 1918 and 2009 and H5N1 avian influenza. Animal models, though indispensible, have significant limitations with regard to physiological relevance to human disease. The current symposium brings together researchers working on the virus, viral receptors and tissue tropism, innate and adaptive immunity, systems biology and clinical aspects of lung injury and host defense, to address questions on the pathogenesis of influenza. The aim will be to integrate data from animal and ex vivo / in vitro human experimental models as well as human disease to understand pathogenesis of influenza and how this may lead to effective interventions. As this symposium will take place in the aftermath of the first pandemic in 40 years, there will be a wealth of new knowledge as well as intense scientific interest in the subject. In view of the particular interest in influenza and other viral respiratory diseases generated in the Asia-Pacific region arising from the avian flu H5N1 and SARS experience, situating the meeting in Hong Kong would be particularly appropriate.
