Computational Biology

The science of Computational Biology involves the finding of genes in DNA sequences, the development of methods to predict the structure and/or function of newly discovered proteins and structural RNA sequences. Computational Biology enables the clustering of protein sequences into families of related sequences and the development of protein models. The generation of alignments of similar proteins and phylogenetic trees to examine evolutionary relationships is an important function of computational biology.

Evolution has produced DNA sequences that encode proteins with very specific functions. An aspect of computational biology is the prediction of the three-dimensional structure of a protein using algorithms borrowed from physics and chemistry and also by comparison with other proteins with similar amino acid sequences.
